ABOUT

Biography

-Graduated from College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Seoul National University (1963)

-Ph.D. in Linguistics, Indiana University, 1973.

-Has been teaching Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Seoul Nat'l University since 1973 in the Dept of Linguistics and Cognitive Science Program of the University.

-A Visiting Professor in Dept of Linguistics, UCLA (1999-2001).

-Started the Korean Lg and Ling Program at Dept of East Asian Languages and Cultures, UCLA as a Visiting Professor from 1986 to 1998.

-Taught a seminar course entitled Contrastive Analysis of Japanese and Korean at EALC, UCLA , Winter 2000.

-Taught at the Ling Soc of America Linguistic Institute (held at UCSC) in 1991.

-Published articles in leading journals in Linguistics including Language, Linguistic Inquiry, Foundations of Language, Language Sciences and so on.

-Has worked on (in)definites, negative polarity, topic-focus, tense-aspect-modality, anaphora, argument structure, speech acts, in semantics, syntax, pragmatics, language acquisition and natural language processing.

-Served on the editorial board of Linguistics and Philosophy (1997-2003) and Journal of East Asian Linguistics (1999-2002 (as area editor:1992-1998)), and is currently an Editor of Pragmatics (2001-), on the advisory editors board of Journal of Pragmatics (2001-), on the special editorial board of The Journal of the Linguistic Society of Japan (2001-), and editor-in chief of Journal of Cognitive Science (Seoul).

-Started a Cog Sci movement at Seoul Nat'l U early 1980's, instigated a graduate program of Cognitive Science at Seoul Nat'l U (1994) and Institute for Cognitive Science at Seoul Nat'l U (1997), being Director of the Institute (1999-2001).

-President, The Korean Society for Cognitive Science, 1994-1996.

-Started the Int'l Conference on Cogsci (ICCS) in Seoul (1997), followed by 2nd one in Tokyo (1999), 3rd one in Beijing (2001), 4th one scheduled in Australia (2003).

-Taught at the Linguistic Society of America-sponsored Linguistic Institute (UCSB, summer 2003).

-Organized NSF-funded Workshop on Topic and Focus: Intonation and Meaning, with Daniel Buring and Matt Gordon.

-Conducted an int'l joint research project funded by Korea Research Foundation on Negative Polarity with Distinguished Scholar Ed Keenan, Korean scholars Seungho Nam and Daeho Chung, 1998-2000.

-Conducted a three-year soft science project on Semantic Structure of Predicates in Korean funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (1996-1999).

-Conducted a project on cross-linguistic Contrastive Predicate Topic, funded by Korea Research Foundation (2000-2002).

-Tenure reviewed several eminent American linguists.
